One of the things to understand about working with aluminum is that it naturally forms a thin oxide layer on its outer surface. The layer thickness can affect the laser welding process, causing reduced penetration and porosity (inclusions or ‘bubbles’) in the weld joint. This paper describes a couple of different cleaning methods that can be used to prepare the aluminum parts for processing.
